A history of a behemoth that also is history of Indian industry history of Indian industry By Rachna TyagiOctober 14, 2018 15:29 IST The pilot: J.R.D. Tata at the 50th anniversary of the 1932 Karachi-Ahmedabad-Bombay flight.

T.R. Doongaji comes from Nagpur The city in which Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. At the age of 6-years-old, his cousin would take him to the temple, and before entering the temple, he would request the young man to bow his head to a statue which was "the founder" placed on a pedestal. "I did what he asked me to," says Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata student, he worked for 52 years (42 as an executive) with Tata Group in addition to being the managing director in three Group companies.Jamsetji set up a provident fund for his employees. It was the first of this kind in India, and an injury compensation fund.Ratan Tata spearheaded the group's global endeavors. This was not only about the big-bang purchases and investments, but also an intelligent expansion that leveraged the strengths of Tata Group.

Some time ago certain politicians in Nagpur would like to change the name of Nagpur's hall for convocation at Nagpur University, the J.N. Tata Hall, to a local leader's name. A friend from Nagpur called Doongaji, asking whether he had any information about the hall. Doongaji looked into archives of the Tata Central Archives to see how the hall got the name. "We found that the Empress Mills Nagpur had contributed towards the cost of the hall and we have the entire record. We recently won that appeal in High Court. I will not permit anyone to take Tata's name or property," is her proud Parsi.

Few companies command this kind of trust from their staff. In addition, Doongaji attributes it to the management that is the Tata Group. "Between the founder and Cyrus [Mistry], there have been four chairmen--three were knighted and one is a Bharat Ratna," Says Doongaji. "How many groups can claim the same quality of leadership?

The story began when Jamsetji purchased a 10-acre piece of land that was marshy from the Nagpur King and set up Empress Mills. (It was registered with the city of Bombay in 1874 as Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji had established a trading company in 1868.)

Jamsetji did not want his employees to work in the squalid conditions that he witnessed in Lancashire's cotton mills. Therefore, in Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation and put in an equipment installed to help humidify air. Sprinklers were also installed to limit the destruction caused by accidental fires. He also created a fund for providents which was it was first-of-its kind in India, and an accident compensation fund for accidents.

The moment that Jamsetji returned to Bombay the following year, he was able to earn enough money that he decided to turn his attention towards purchasing property. Then, he became one of the most wealthy men in the country. Then, he began investing in the future of industrialization of India and came up with plans for a variety of exciting projects. The first family members: (Standing at right) Jamsetji Tata's younger son Ratan, Jamsetji and Ratan's wife; (sitting from left) Jamsetji's wife Hirabai Dorabji's partner Meherbai as well as Dorabji.

In the course of a trip to the US at the request by industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric development at Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had thought of a hydroelectric development in India and the visit set in the final decision. In the Lonavala and Khandala regions located in the Western Ghats, which gets one of the highest amounts of rainfall anywhere in the world, and is blessed with the perfect combination of soil, valleys, and slopes, he started the work of the Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company. Large pipes brought water to the foot of this mountain near Khopoli, where at the power house it was converted into electrical energy. The project was an important game changer, since it was able to supply electricity to the city that was growing in Bombay.

Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company was officially registered as a public concern on the 7th of November, 1910, and it commissioned the project at the 11th of February 1915 when Lord Willingdon governor of Bombay, inaugurated it. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," states Rajesh G. Naik, director of operations and maintenance, Tata Power. The total capability of Tata Power is 447MW.

The most popular feature of The project's 14 acres garden in Lonavala. Jamsetji took an interest in the garden, and he brought home seeds and plants from across the globe. When the steel plant at Jamshedpur was being constructed, he wrote a detailed letter to his son Dorabji on the growing number of trees He wanted him to establish on the property. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall in the northern region of the Western Ghats which is a significant bio-diversity hotspot. The species of animals, plants and birds we find in this region aren't found elsewhere in the world." In the same way, the stunning Tata Baug, built in 1891 and spread over 22 acres in Navsari it is maintained by Dr Rohinton Avari. She has completed a doctoral in landscape and horticulture.

Jamsetji used to be a "omnivorous reader", and an avid reader of Dickens and Thackeray. "He was fond of driving, a good judge of horseflesh, and was satisfied with his well-bred Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his smart turnout. At times he enjoyed boating and sailing, as well as entertaining his friends at picnics," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Chronicle of His Personal Life.

In the realm of 'firsts but, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata's achievements stand out. From obtaining India's very first pilot's license to establishing the first cancer center in the country, J.R.D. Tata set the stage for the development of India. His father, R.D. Tata was a nephew of Jamsetji's mom, as was his mom, Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. He was born in Paris and spent his formative years in France. Following the death of his father, his son succeeded him as a director at Tata Sons at the age of 22.

J.R.D. was appointed Tata Sons chairman in 1938 in the year 1938, when he was 34. The group was comprised of 14 companies in the beginning. After his departure in 1991 it was 95. His contributions were far past Tata Group and its businesses. For instance, he assisted Homi Bhabha establish India's nuclear energy program. Then he helped Homi Bhabha's son Jamshed Bhabha to establish the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.Matter of loyalty: T.R. Doongaji | Janak Bhat

The brightest star of the companies that J.R.D. started was Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly gained a global recognition as one of the top airlines. "J.R.D. would always say that Air India was his first love, and I would hope that he would declare"that Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani, the former chief executive officer of Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
